Artist Statement
Deep, Dark, Bright explores the unexpected joys that emerge from hardship—the moments when the power of the human spirit outshines a desolate landscape. Fear takes hold, grief lies heavy, and yet flickers feel like bonfires; specks of dust glitter and glisten.
I spread and layer my experiences through natural specimens arranged in sculptural shadow boxes. Using the remains of creatures that walk, crawl, flutter, and fly within the atmosphere of Earth, I share the enduring magic of life. Deep, Dark, Bright reflects the resilience of the human spirit during its darkest hours and the profound responsibility we hold—to each other and to the natural world.
At 35, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through sharing my experiences, I hope others may feel less alone and find light in their own dark places.
Specimens
Insects are sourced from farms rooted in local conservation efforts that support economies around the world. Farmers are incentivized to preserve native flora to raise insects away from their natural predators. While some are released back into the wild, others are sold as dead specimens.
We all can agree that native, living species are superior to dead animals. And yet death is also life.
