Taxidermy Reference Study & Recording (Upland Birds)

$275.00

January 18

This workshop is to hone your eyes and learn how to record. You will understand the importance of good reference and how it translates not only to taxidermy, but other art forms as well. It is a study of anatomy, color, shapes, and measurement.

This first course will translate and correspond to Introduction and Intermediate Bird Workshops. While not a prerequisite, it will strengthen your skillset and knowledge of what is to come and how reference is everything to taxidermists. We will be studying upland birds; quail, chukar, and pheasant in this course.

The workshop will cover the study of live animals (through a computer screen for this purpose), dead specimens, and preserved specimens. I will share the methods I have gathered through my practice that started with anatomy & physiology, then at the Burke Museum, taxidermy school, and artist workshops.

This should set you up for success in the mental preparation for your next project. For me, most of taxidermy is about the preparation and planning before skinning even begins.

Links and documents that will be used in the workshop will be shared at least a week before the class so students can come prepared. This is a lecture and demo workshop. Students are encouraged to take notes when applicable. Photos are encouraged.
